The human body has layers of muscles – muscles on top of muscles. Deep tissue massage is an advanced technique focused on manipulating deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. Stronger, deeper treatment is used to target stubborn knots and connective tissue. Deep tissue massage is excellent for chronic tightness, scar formation, repetitive strain or regular high-intensity exercise/sport.

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE EXPLAINED:

Deep tissue massage uses similar movements and techniques from more classical massage, however the pressure is generally more intense, and concentrated on areas that are commonly trigger points of pain. Your therapist will usually begin by warming up the area to be massaged with some lighter massage technique before applying deep tissue massage techniques. This helps to ease the body into the more firm pressure.

With deep tissue massage, the movements are slower and deeper with the therapist often using thumbs, elbow and knuckles. During certain points in the massage, most people may find there is some discomfort and pain. It is important to communicate with your therapist when they hit a tender spot and any discomfort you experience outside of your comfort range. Occasionally if there is some tenderness after a deep tissue massage that can last 1-3 days, the massage therapist may ask you to put some heat on the area.

HOW DEEP SHOULD YOUR MASSAGE BE:

It is important to be realistic about what only one deep tissue massage can achieve. Many people want excessive pressure, however the soft tissues can be threatened by this which counteract the benefits of deep tissue treatment. In reality, undoing chronic knots and tension that build up for a lifetime is best achieved with a regular schedule of massage to retain your muscle tension habits. Getting rid of your knots takes time!
  • Just remember there is such a thing as too hard!
  • It should not be excruciating or unbearable for long periods of time
  • You should not be sore for more than 3 days after a massage
  • Bruising can happen, particularly to people with fair skin so let me know to adjust the pressure
  • You shouldn’t feel too much ‘muscle guarding’ or tensing your muscles during this type of treatment
